[Pre- Hayman's Draft Six, FW II.2]

[Hayman thinks this is Joyce's first try at an opening for II.2, bridging II.1 to the Muddest Thick vignette. It's built almost entirely from notes in VI.A which may be from 1926, and which even at this deepest layer are frustratingly opaque. Storiella originally followed it. It's tempting to guess that Joyce cobbled together notes because he was feeling uninspired, and once he got going he discarded most of this false start...?]

FDV: "Scribbledehobbles are at their pensums. Trifid tongue and dove without gall to solve dulcarnon's dire dilemma what stumped bold Alexander and drove him to pulfer turnips. But what a world of weariness is theirs! For how many guldens would one walk now to the pillar? For one hundred? For one hundred's thousand? And to what will't all serve them in an after world. Will it make of one a good milker? Will he go away and not be silly? Or where will he find funds to smoke a whole box of matches per day? Or if she makes an earth of heaven will she lilt Barney take me home again? As long as Una reads serials in a bummeltrain the worst at last at least may happen, such as go to meet Mary, miss Mamy & mary Meg. Why ask her sense from what she's read since every annal has its own aroma? Quid vobis videtur And even the remembering a tree is too beautiful for her to listen. Small blame to her then if she shook her shoe off at geography class, doing rivers of India with a whisper of wilfulove heard round the world."

VI.A "Scribbledehobble"

"pensums" implies boring exercises (not pensées) with the free pun 'pen-sums'. it gets revised to 'theorems' and then trimmed.

VI.A "trut trifid tongue" [cleft into three = Shem/Berkeley]
VI.A "S P dove without gall" [pure = Shaun]
VI.A "dul carnon = 2 horned, 47th prop of Euclid or Alexander's 2 horn heads" [Chaucer uses 'dulcarnon' for the difficult 47th]
VI.A "to pulfer turnips" cf pulverize, turn dried turnips to powder?, pilfer, prefer?

the 7thC Quran may allude to 4thC-BC Alexander as Dhul Qarnayn, which was subsequently misread as two-horned

who is bold Alexander and how was he stumped and what good did pulfering turnips do? it sounds like a humiliation, an act of desperation (solve/stump?)

VI.A "for how much would you walk to Barcola" [Trieste to Barcola also 1hr]

what does walking to the pillar imply?  (tram terminus and meetingplace) scary after dark? [one hour from Chapelizod]

"weariness" = they're ready for bed? or already world-weary??

to what will it all serve them in an after world = will it mean anything in the afterlife???

VI.A "good milker"
VI.A "go away & don't be silly"
VI.A "smokes a whole box of matches" [maybe 50 matches per box, = 2 packs of cigarettes?]
VI.A "Irish colleen in heaven sings Barney, take me home again"

Barney take me home again [sheetmusic]

VI.A "Una Bacon (style of J.J.)"
VI.A "read serial in tram" [bummeltrain?] bummel = wander
VI.A "go to meet girl meet other man" 'other'???

this sounds like the dramatic trope of what if

VI.A "annuals (flowers)"
VI.A "quid vobis videtur extra omnes" [what is your opinion/ everybody out 1936 pdf] 'an ancient formula originally designed to allow expression of contrary opinions'
VI.A "⊥ trees too beautiful for her to listen"
VI.A "⊥ takes off shoes at the dinner"
VI.A "T's whisper heard in Pekin"

2DV: "Scribbledehobbles are bent on their pensums reading nails & biting lips. Trifid tongue others woo & work for the backslapper gladhander and dove without gall and she whose mind's a jackdaw's nest of tearing up letters she never wrote to solve dulcarnon's twohorned{headed} dilemma what stumped bold Alexander and drove him to pulfer turnips. But, my hat, what a world of weariness is theirs waiting to hear their own mistakes! For how many guldens would one walk now to the pillar? For one hundred? For one hundred's thousand? And to what will't all serve them in an after reeraw world. Will it make of one a good milker having been brought up on superlatives? Will he go away in a peajacket and not be silly? Or where will he find funds to smoke a whole box of matches per day? Or if she makes an earth of heaven will she lilt Barney take me home again? As long as Una reads serials in a bummeltrain with a lot of unexciting trousers about it is wholly probable that the holy parable the worst at last at least may happen, such as go to meet Mary, miss Mamy & mary Meg. Why ask her or Tossy Madden sense from what she's read since every annal has its own aroma? Quid vobis videtur And even the remembering a tree is too beautiful for her to listen. Small blame to her then if she shook her shoe off at geography class, doing rivers of India with a whisper of wilfulove heard round the world."

VI.A "T reads his nails" [feigning boredom? = Shaun?]

"biting lips" [anxiety? or to make them look redder? = Shem??]

VI.A "others work or woo for T"
VI.A "backslapper gladhander"
VI.A "mind a jackdaw's nest" [why is Issy added here now??]
VI.A "⊢ tears up letters" ["she never wrote" = mentally tore them up?]

Issy joins Shem and Shaun in trying to solve Euclid!?

VI.A "my hat" = my goodness, or what nonsense!
VI.A "$[ listens to hear his own mistakes"
VI.A "reeraw" chaos/spree/drunk
VI.A "brought up on superlatives"
VI.A "peajacket"

3DV: "While standfast and flower discusst the past and walking progress hinks linkafuss foremost, scribbledehoys are bent on their pensums. Trifid tongue, others woo will and work for, and dove without gall, the backslapping gladhander and she whose mind's a jilldaw's nest who tears up letters she never put pen upon when bother her hair's in a queer of a mood. As if that three could solve a twohornheaded dulcarnon that stumped Alex among anders and drove him to pulfer turnips. And, my hat, what a worldall of weariness is theirs waiting to hear their proper mistakes! For how many guldens would one post now to the pillar? For one hundred? For one hundred's thousand? And to what will't all serve them in an after reeraw life? Will it make of one a good milker the having been brought up on superlatives? Or will he go away in a peajacket and just not be silly? Or where will he find funds to smoke a whole box of matches diurnally? Or if she makes an earth of heaven will she lilt that Barney take her home again? For so long as shes read serials in a bummeltrain with a lot of uninteresting trousers hanging around it is as wholly probable as a holy parable that the worst at least at last may happen, such as go to meet Mary, miss Mamy and marry Meg. Why ask her or Tossy Madden sense from anything that shred since every annual has its own aroma? Quid vobis videtur? Even remembering of a tree is too beautiful for her to listen. ¶ Small blame be her's therefore if she shook her off at geography class doing rivers of India with a whisper of wilfulness heard round the giddying globe! ¶ Beware of Fanciulla's heart, the heart of Fanciulla. And her hand that's as gloveless as a peer's in the presence and how both will be ready maid marrying when Jollicomes matching home. 4DV: "While one word burrows another, standfest towelturbaned and flower in her wrap around, face full of flesh and fat as hen's in forehead Airy Anna & Blue Bart royal pair in the house of the 100 bottles discusst the past the angerache of their love & the hungerbrewd it bore them the fairs at home & expurge trade and walking progress hinks linkafuss foremost the shellroad path from dayfal to the shrilling of the crowcrested, scribbledehobbles are bent on their pensums. Trifid tongue, others woo will and work for, and dove without gall, the backslapping gladhander his singing likeness, and she whose mind's a jilldaw's nest who tears up letters she never put pen upon when bother her hair's in a queer of a mood. If a gas consumer habituated to marble mentuls buys a dozen of apples every first Friday during a whole leap year at the weight of seven sesterces per pound overthepoise, taking abbacco as .7 & letting born of bulrushes stand for any W how many {what grand total} of sentinels in reindeer pelts & aided by a span of oxen fed on Trinidad's shell cocoa in sheets & sheets of rein will it take to paper a trench fifteen yards longer than breadth {a cobbler's bulk} is broad? Will it make of one a good milker the having been brought up on superlatives? Or will he go away in a peajacket and just not be silly or not care toppings for the birthrate and lean longingly on his lentils? Or where will he find funds to smoke a whole box of matches diurnally? Or if she in dimity makes an earth of heaven will she lilt that Barney take her home again? For so long as shes in dimity read serials in a bummeltrain with a lot of uninteresting duck trousers hanging around it is as wholly probable as a holy parable that the worst at least at last may happen, such as go to meet Mary, miss Mamy and marry Meg.
